Back to School: Adjusting Your Schedule Without Losing Momentum

Aug 6, 2026

So it's here. Alarms are going off earlier. Backpacks are packed. And if you're like most of my clients right now, your own routine just got knocked sideways along with everyone else's.

This is the part I want to talk to you about — not the prep, because that window's closed for a lot of you. This is about the next few weeks, while everything's still settling.

The mistake I see every year

Here's what happens. The schedule changes, your workout time gets swallowed up, dinner gets rushed, and somewhere in there you tell yourself, "I'll figure it back out once things calm down."

I get why. But "once things calm down" isn't a date on the calendar. For a lot of families, this is calm — this is just what the school year looks like now. If you're waiting for it to settle before you get back to your routine, you could be waiting until June.

You don't need things to calm down. You need your plan to fit the season you're actually in, not the one you had in July.

Adjusting isn't losing momentum

I want to be really clear about this, because I see clients beat themselves up over it every year: changing what your training and your meals look like right now is not the same as falling off.

If your workout was 45 minutes and now you've only got 25, that's not a failure — that's an adjustment. If your go-to dinner took 30 minutes and now you've got 15, swap it for something that fits, don't skip it. Momentum isn't about doing the exact same thing no matter what. It's about staying in motion through the change.

The people who actually lose momentum aren't the ones who shrink their workouts. They're the ones who wait for a version of the day that has more room in it, and then just... stop until it shows up.

What I'd have you focus on this week

If we were sitting down together right now, here's where I'd point you.

Protect one non-negotiable. Not five things. One. Maybe it's your morning workout, maybe it's getting a real breakfast in before the chaos starts. Pick the one thing you're not willing to lose, and build the rest of the day around keeping it.

Shrink before you skip. If the full plan doesn't fit today, don't cancel it — shrink it. A 15-minute workout still counts. A simple, thrown-together meal with protein in it still counts. Something small and done beats something perfect that never happens.

Expect the first two weeks to be messy. This isn't permission to give up — it's permission to not expect perfection while everyone's schedule is still shaking out. New pickup times, new practice schedules, new everything. Give it two weeks to find its shape before you judge how it's going.

Reassess once it settles. Once you've got a real read on what your week actually looks like — not what you hope it looks like — that's when you lock in the version of your plan that's actually sustainable for the school year.

The bottom line

You don't need your old summer schedule back. You need a plan that works with the one you've got right now. Adjust it, shrink it if you have to, but don't stop it. That's the whole difference.
