End-of-Summer Reset: Getting Back to Structure Before the Routine Hits You

Jul 31, 2026

You know that feeling in the last couple weeks of summer? Half of you is still soaking up the slower pace, and the other half already knows what's coming. Earlier mornings. Packed lunches again. A schedule that's about to have a lot less give in it.

I see this every year with my clients. Summer loosens things up — later nights, more cookouts, workouts whenever there's a window instead of on the clock. And that's fine. That's what summer's for. But then school shows back up and it's like the calendar just flips on you overnight.

Here's the thing I always tell my clients this time of year: you don't have to wait for that first Monday to feel it. You can start closing the gap now, while there's still some room to move.

You don't need to blow it all up and start over

I get it — the instinct is to go all in. Cut everything out, get strict, "get serious" the week before school starts. I've watched clients try this every single year, and it almost never sticks. You end up dreading the new season instead of just easing into it.

You don't need a hard reset with me. You need to close the gap between where you're at right now and where your schedule's about to take you. That's a smaller ask than it sounds like, and it's exactly how I coach people through this stretch.

Where I'd have you start

If we were sitting down together right now, here's what I'd tell you to focus on first.

Sleep. If bedtimes have drifted later — yours or the kids' — don't wait until the night before school to fix it. Push it back 15-20 minutes every few days. Small enough nobody fights you on it, big enough that it actually adds up by the time school starts.

One meal. Just one. Pick the one that's easiest for you to get consistent — for most of my clients it's breakfast — and lock that in before you touch anything else. Once you've got one thing you can count on, everything else gets easier to build around it.

Your training time. On the calendar, not just floating around in your head. I know how summer training goes — whenever there's a window. Once school's back, those windows shrink fast and other people start claiming them for you. Look at next week and grab your time before the schedule fills in without you.

Your kitchen. A quick pass through the pantry and fridge now saves you from the "there's nothing to eat, grab whatever's fastest" spiral during the first chaotic week back.

This isn't about being tougher on yourself

It's about timing. The clients I see handle this best aren't grinding harder than everyone else — they just moved a few things into place before the schedule forced their hand. Trying to build structure during the first hectic week of school is a lot harder than starting while you've still got a little breathing room.

So — pick one thing from this list. Just one. Start it this week. That's all I'd ask of you if you were in front of me right now.
