How to Move When You Don't Want to Go Outside

Sep 3, 2026

Two weeks ago I talked about how movement quietly disappears this time of year. Last week we covered the food side. Now let's talk about the part everybody dreads once it's cold and dark by 5:30 — actually getting yourself to move.

Here's the truth: you don't need to love the cold to stay active through it. You just need options that don't depend on wanting to go outside, because on a lot of these days, you won't.

You don't have to fight the weather

I'm not going to tell you to bundle up and push through a walk you don't want to take. Some people genuinely enjoy that, and if that's you, great, keep doing it. But if you're not that person, fighting the weather every day is a losing battle, and I'd rather give you options that don't require it.

The goal isn't "get outside no matter what." The goal is "keep moving, one way or another." Those are two different goals, and only one of them actually holds up through a full winter.

Where I'd have you get your movement instead

If we were talking through your week right now, here's what I'd point you toward.

Walk the mall, or any big indoor space. Malls, big box stores, even large indoor gyms — they're built for walking, they're climate controlled, and nobody's going to look twice at you doing laps. A lot of my clients do their best thinking on a slow mall walk before the stores even open.

Walk your own house. This sounds almost too simple, but it works. Laps around your kitchen and living room while you're on a phone call. Pacing during a show instead of sitting through the whole thing. It's not glamorous, but ten or fifteen minutes of this, a few times a day, adds up to real steps you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Take the stairs like they're your workout. If you've got stairs in your house, your office, anywhere — a few extra trips up and down is genuinely one of the most efficient ways to get your heart rate up in a small space. You don't need equipment for this. You just need to stop avoiding the stairs you already walk past.

Bring the gym inside. A short bodyweight circuit in your living room does more than people give it credit for. Squats, push-ups, some kind of core work, a few minutes of anything that gets you moving — fifteen minutes of this beats zero minutes of the outdoor walk you talked yourself out of.

Stack movement onto things you're already doing. Walk while you're on a call. Do a few squats while dinner's in the oven. Pace during commercials. None of this needs its own slot on the calendar — it just needs you to notice the pockets of time you're already standing around in.

Consistency beats intensity here

None of these need to be a full workout to count. The whole point of this season is that the little things you used to get for free — walking to the car, being outside because it's nice out — disappear. This is just about replacing that with something else, not about turning your living room into a bootcamp.

Pick one or two of these that actually fit your life, and use them on the days you don't want to go outside. That's most of the days between now and spring, so it's worth having a real answer ready instead of just skipping it.

Next up, we're heading into the holidays — starting with how to get through Thanksgiving without losing the progress you've built this fall.
