When the Excuses Get Easier: Staying Consistent as the Weather Actually Turns

Sep 10, 2026

We've talked about the pattern behind this whole season, the food side, and how to move indoors when you need to. Now I want to talk about something that's happening right now, this week, whether you've noticed it yet or not.

The weather's starting to turn. Not dramatically — it's not winter yet. But the mornings are a little cooler, the light's starting to change, and if you're anything like my clients, you've probably already caught yourself thinking "maybe I'll skip the walk today" more than you did back in July.

This is the part nobody talks about

Everybody talks about it once it's already a problem. Almost nobody talks about right now — this in-between stretch where nothing dramatic has happened yet, but the excuses have gotten a little easier to reach for.

That's exactly why this stretch matters. It's not one big moment. It's a hundred small ones, and each one on its own feels completely reasonable. "It's a little cold, I'll go tomorrow." "It's getting dark earlier, I'll just stay in tonight." None of those thoughts feel like a big deal in the moment. That's the whole problem with them.

What's actually happening

As the weather turns, your excuses don't get more convincing — they just get easier to reach for, because the discomfort of skipping something is lower than it was in the summer. Skipping a walk in July when it's beautiful out feels like you're missing something. Skipping the same walk in late September when it's a little chilly and gray feels like a completely reasonable call.

Same decision. Same skip. It just costs you less guilt to make it right now, which means you'll make it more often if you're not paying attention.

What I'd have you watch for

If we were talking through this right now, here's what I'd point out.

Notice the exact moment the excuse shows up. Not after you've skipped three days — right when the thought crosses your mind the first time. "It's a little cold today" is the moment to catch, not the fourth missed day later.

Lower the bar instead of raising the guilt. If the weather's genuinely rougher than it was a month ago, that's real — so shrink what you're asking of yourself instead of skipping it entirely. A shorter walk still counts. A few minutes still counts.

Watch your own language. If you catch yourself saying "I'll get back to it once the weather's better," that's the same trap from a few weeks ago wearing a different outfit. The weather's not going to get better again until spring. Waiting for it isn't a plan.

Decide today what an "off day" actually looks like. Not zero. Have a real answer ready — a walk around the house, a few minutes of something — so when the excuse shows up, you've already got a smaller version ready instead of an all-or-nothing choice.

The whole point of catching it now

This is the easiest point in the whole season to stay ahead of this. Nothing's fallen apart yet. The weather's only mildly annoying, not genuinely brutal. If you build the habit of noticing the excuse and shrinking instead of skipping right now, you'll actually have it in place by the time things get harder later this fall.

Catch it here, this week. It's a lot easier than catching it a month from now, once the habit's already slipped.
